Naturally heated fresh water pools in a bush setting!
Berry Springs Nature Park is set in a beautiful tranquil relaxing bush setting, just a 45-minute drive south of Darwin.
During World War II, there area was a recreational base for many thousands of troops and remnants of the base such as huts and weirs are still evident.
Now visitors have easy access to three main bush swimming pools downstream from a waterfall.
The water temperature is a constant 28 degrees Celsius (82°F) year-round because the pools are fed by underground geothermal heated spring water.
Berry Springs harbours a diverse range of aquatic plant and animal life, and is easily entered and egressed by shore.
Underwater, there are native fish such as small archer fish, barramundi and catfish, as well as freshwater crayfish and turtles.
Divers might also be accompanied by the occasional monitor lizard swimming by on the surface.
The pools are kept full by a low weir and swimming below the weir is not recommended due to the presence of crocodiles.
The pools may be closed during the wet season, October to April, due to flooding.
Berry Springs Nature Park is also a haven for bird life, and during March and April native flowers are in full bloom.
There are also great monsoon forest and woodlands walking trails.
