INFORMATION
Centurian was originally built as a timber clipper before being converted to a square-rigged two-masted barque. She served as a passenger ship and cargo carrier before meeting her end as a collier.
While under tow, departing Sydney for Honolulu in 1887, she entangled the tow rope.
In an effort to avoid a collision with another moored vessel, she hit rocks and sank just inside Sydney Harbour.
At the time of the accident, matters were not helped by the strong southerly wind and a rain squall.
The crew were all rescued by the following pilot vessel.
Centurion is an ideal introductory wreck dive lying in 18 metres (60’) on sand.
The twisted remains include the mostly buried hull, deck framing, sections of the three masts, anchor chain and many other remnants.
Fish life on the wreck is plentiful and Centurion is one of few sites where you can find both pineapple fish and intriguing red Indian fish.
