HMAS Brisbane (D 41) – Perth-Class Guided Missile Destroyer

Ex-HMAS Brisbane, Steel Cat, was one of three Perth-class guided missile destroyers operated by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). She was built in the United States and entered service with the RAN in 1967.

HMAS Brisbane, HMAS Hobart scuttled in Yankalilla Bay near Adelaide, South Australia and HMAS Perth scuttled in Albany, Western Australia were all RAN Perth-class guided missile destroyers.

The Brisbane was scuttled using explosive charges on 31 July 2005, and now sits upright on her keel in 27 metres (90’) of water, about nine kilometres (6 mi) off Mooloolaba in Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

To help protect the wreck, access to the Ex-HMAS Brisbane Conservation Park is restricted to all vessels, divers and snorkellers without a permit or written approval.

Mooloolaba is a 90-minute (100 km/60 mi) drive north of Brisbane on the M1.
