HMAS Hobart (D 39) – River-Class Destroyer Escort

Ex-HMAS Hobart, Green Ghost, was one of three Perth-class guided missile destroyers operated by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). She was built in the United States and entered service with the RAN in 1965.

HMAS Hobart, HMAS Perth scuttled in Albany, Western Australia and HMAS Brisbane scuttled near Mooloolaba, Queensland were all RAN Perth-class guided missile destroyers.

The Hobart was scuttled on 3 November 2002, and now sits upright on her keel in 30 metres (100’) in Yankalilla Bay within the Rapid Head Sanctuary Zone in Encounter Marine Park.

Her scuttling took less than three minutes!

There is a shore-based memorial commemorating the Hobart in Lady Bay where the anchor from the vessel points to the wreck.

Lady Bay is a 90-minute (80 km/50 mi) drive south of Adelaide via Main South Road/B23 & M2.
